Welcome to Čakovec

Čakovec is in the centre of Međimurje and it is a town with pleasant and hardworking people. This where the Romans had their resort Aquama. The wooden Čakov's Tower was first mentioned in the 13th century, and it is the origin of the town and its name.

In the 16th century, the noble family Zrinski converted it into a fortified and sumptuous wasserburg. Čakovec receives its current Croatian and European touch in the middle of the 19th century when it was declared a free royal town.

THE PARK ZRINSKI

For three years in a row, from 2008-2010, we are the proud owners of the title  „The Cleanest and Most Decorated Town in Continental Croatia“. The Park Zrinski is a green oasis in the centre of the town and it is a protected monument of landscape architecture. Almost every house in the town has flowers in its windows or balconies. The smell of flowers, well-kept gardens are the heritage we are particularly proud of. In the middle of the park, there is the castle Stari Grad, the entrance to which is guarded by the Zrinski Guard-a historic military unit of the noble family Zrinski. Our town is recognisable thanks to this well-known noble family. Their historic castle is in the middle of this green paradise, and around this park, our town has grown into a desireable place to live.

ČAKOVEC TODAY

Čakvec today, is a busy town and one of the most desireable spots to live in due to the following: it is a well-connected with the rest of the country and Europe, modern infrastructure, beautiful horticulture, successful economy, small and medium enterprises, great investment climate, dinamic cultural and sports activities - all these are the reasons why twenty thousand citizens live a very comfortable life. Apart from the historical core of the town, the following is available for tourists: excellent gastronomy, swimming pools, many sports facilities, rich nightlife, various cultural and social events throughout the year.

A TOWN OF CULTURE

Čakovec cherishes its cultural activities and at every opportunity presents its cultural and historical heritage. There are numerous cultural and artistic events. The oldest and most significant one is the May Music Memorial, which is dedicated to the composer Josip Štolcer Slavenski who was born and lived in Čakovec. Then there is the School of Animated Film, which was founded in 1975, and, to our pride, is one of the oldest children's film clubs. The beginning of each year is marked by a carneval with the largest collection of traditional masks in Croatia, named „Međimurski Fašnik“. This carneval is the reason why Čakovec has become a member of the European Union of Carneval Cities. Furthemore, there is „Čakovec četvrtkom“(Thursdays in Čakovec), a popular seasonal theatre and concert program which has a cult status in Čakovec. Autumn is reserved for the music festival Jazz Fair and for our local Big Band(founded in 1995).
